5 Things You Should Know Before Installing Pavers in Your Patio

Planning to install a paver patio? Keep these tips in mind to make the process easy and fast, and the results incredible:

1. Decide the Type of Paver You Want to Use

To build a paver patio, you will need to pick a material first. Pavers come in a plethora of materials, including concrete, stamped, slate, flagstone, wood, or any recycled material. Different types have different uses and benefits.

Choose the one that helps you achieve your dream design. Ideally, concrete pavers should be used. They are clean, versatile, and easy to install. You can also go for flagstones for a more rustic and traditional appeal. To make your paver patio look homely and welcoming, you can choose pavers in the wood material.

2. Dig Deep for Proper Installation

Before installing pavers on your patio, you will need to dig deeper – at least 8 to 10 inches to start the patio work. Make sure to call your local authorities to check for any electrical or plumbing lines. Afterward, check the soil as well. If it’s dry, water the area the night before you want to dig the soil. Doing so will soften the soil and ease the digging process.

3. Protect the New Soil Base

Once you have dug out the old soil, you will need to protect the new soil base. One of the best ways to do that is by spreading a landscaping cloth over the new base. This will prevent weeds from attacking the soil and disrupting the area where the paves need to be installed.

4. Seal the Cracks

For your pavers to set well, you will need to apply a thin layer of sand between the gaps. Besides keeping the patio paver in place, the sealing helps with improving the color of the pavers, preventing stains, minimizing the risk of weeds, or averting liquid from seeping into the space.

When filling in the cracks, apply only a small layer of sand. Do this using a push broom to gently spread the material into the given space. Remove the excess with a vacuum.

5. Always Buy Extra Pavers

When buying pavers, make it a point to invest in a few extra. You may need more of them than the estimated count during the installation. If not, then the additional ones can come in handy in case of repairs or replacements later on.

If you have little to no knowledge of how to install pavers on your patio, your best bet will be to hire professionals for the job!
